The Red Deer pub in the centre of Sheffield is nestled behind university buildings and only a few steps from the heaving West Street with tram and bus stops. A CAMRA pub, this place prides itself on a great selection of beers on tap, a cosy atmosphere and a solid menu of food served until late in the evening. And when we say dog friendly, I can’t tell you the level of attention of pup got while here..!
I will confess now that this has been one of our favourite places in Sheffield centre for a drink after work, for many years. It’s a favourite of many people which does mean it can be tricky to cater for a large group on some evenings unless you get there early. This especially applies on quiz night.
When we took our Poppy into the bar, fair to say that it was like being with a celebrity. The Postgrad Society were meeting next to us and spent much time ogling her… the bar staff came over to make a fuss and we were handed a bowl of water for her without having to ask.
It is a bit tight in places around the pub, so if you have a dog that’s happy to settle down next to you or under the table, you’ll find it much easier. We met another couple with a real youngster of 5 months and they looked fraught to say the least!
One of my highlights from the menu itself is the list of allergens that are clearly labelled – making it a great place to go for people who are forever asking, “Does this have [insert allergen] in it?” The selection of vegetarian dishes is great but the meat they do really well. If you’re looking for hearty pub food to accompany your beer, then this is your place.
I would feel happy taking almost anyone here, especially as we could take the pup! It’s a distinct step up from the ‘spoons and KFC literally round the corner – so expect to naturally pay a couple of pounds more. To be honest, if you wanted something cheap to line your stomach pre-night out, then you probably wouldn’t want the Red Deer. The ale drinking, board game playing, thesis debating atmosphere probably isn’t quite what you’re after.
Whereas a cosy date with your other half over good ale..? We had a wonderful time.
