As of the beginning of September The Riverside pub Sheffield, will be launching a new Sunday Roast Menu. Never one to turn down the opportunity to eat a good roast dinner, we went to the menu launch and found out it wasn’t just the menu that was new…
On arrival we picked drinks – for us it has to be real ale. The Riverside has always given us a good selection of ales with something for all tastes. This time didn’t disappoint – with local beers on tap and including True North brewery who now run the pub and invited us along.
Rob went for his usual darker beer, picking the Acorn Brewery “Darkness” while I chose the North Union “Pale Ale”. Both solid ales and good choices from the selection.
We’ve been into the Riverside before over the last eight years but somehow it felt different this time. One major factor being that we usually would go with a group of friends as part of a local pub crawl or to sit outside in the sun.
Instead it was just the two of us and none of the usual cliquey crowds we expected, there was a real mix of people. It felt calmer and the atmosphere ‘softer’ – the kind of place you would want to come for a Sunday lunch and drink as a couple.
However we didn’t stick around too long downstairs as the lovely Julie whisked us to the new function room above. She told us that is was newly refurbished and they’re excited to get people seeing it and using it for parties and weddings.
Then we chatted the weather as Brits often do… turns out they’d been a wet wedding the day before. The team had been on hand ready to move inside but the couple shunned the suggestion, risking the rain and being rewarded with sun! N’awwh love gossip like this.
Even on a bright but grey day, warm light came in to the room. The plate display was my favourite and I loved the colours and style. Whereas Rob wasn’t too keen on the stylised pictures in chunky frames – but appreciated the decision to display all women being portrayed in a regal way.
Though a well curated decor, without a good number of people in the room it felt a little empty. The atmosphere improved once there were ten or more people sat down and we felt very settled chatting and taking pictures.
The roast lunch I could describe… but everyone knows that photos are best when it comes to food.
Between us we tried the roast beef and roast pork. Vegetables were served in huge portions in enamel sharing bowls in the middle and each plate had two homemade yorkshire puddings. The yorkshires looked at first a little overdone but turned out to taste nicely browned and cooked brilliantly.
My favourite part of the meal was the gravy. Jesus, I have no idea what it was but it tasted great – and once again came in an ample portion for two people.
Fair to say we were impressed with the room and the menu given to us. A great selection of veg and I got a cheeky extra bit of crackling on my roast beef… Thanks team, you rock. I only hope they keep up the portion sizes of the roasts as this would be a big factor in deciding to take friends there in the future. If you go, let me know!
True North have really given the Riverside a new look and new vibe. Even if you preferred the way it was before, perhaps we can agree on one thing… What they’re doing now they are doing well. Based on the atmosphere downstairs, we both said that we genuinely would be likely to go for a casual drink, whereas we wouldn’t have been before. The outside space still looks nice so maybe on a sunny day soon?
Thanks for having us Riverside – it is good to have had our minds changed about this place in Kelham Island!
